My way of working is simple: I always take photos after having "framed the space".
Whatever surrounds or envelops the figure, however simple or nonexistent it seems, needs to be well thought through.

Once the stage, the frame, has been "defined", I place the figure now that I can concentrate on her.

In a portrait the space around the figure is as important as the figure itself.
