Mapplethorpe, 1984

As well as being a great photographer, Robert Mapplethope was an elegant and friendly person.
I took this photo of him when he was exhibiting in the Fernando Vijande Gallery.
I asked him to hold one of his photos, still with the protective strips on, and sit on one of the packing cases where the words "works of art" were displayed.
I liked the idea of "censored" photography and the case specifying that it contained works of art.

It was a time in which Mapplethorpe's exhibitions were having a lot of problems with some of the U.S. museums.
